Council homes in £100m revamp bid

About 670 new council homes could be built in Stoke-on-Trent as part of a major regeneration plan.

The city council is expected to bid for between £100m and £200m for the scheme from the government under the Private Finance Initiative.

The council said it wanted to build new homes and regenerate the estates Abbey Hulton, Bentilee, Blurton, Chell Heath and Fegg Hayes, Meir and Norton.

Councillors are set to approve the application at a meeting next week.

The bid would be sent to the Department of Communities and Local Government where it would be up against competition from bids from around the country.

Under the scheme, the council wants to build about 1,000 homes, including about 670 council-owned social rented homes.

The council homes would include houses for older residents and people with special needs.

'Wide choice'

The council also wants to build about 360 homes for open market sale and shares ownership.

Joan Bell, portfolio holder for housing, said the major regeneration programme "would transform Stoke-on-Trent's suburban estates".

"We want to make the estates popular places to live with a wide choice of housing and where local people are supported to get into work and improve their neighbourhoods," she said.

"The new council homes would help people who cannot afford their own home, while new privately-owned homes would allow local people to buy their own place in their community."

The money would also create jobs enterprise training centres, fund new and replacement community buildings as well as children's playgrounds.

The council will discuss the application on 22 October.
