Dip-sticks test underage drinkers

Police are to use dip-stick tests to check teenagers' drinks in an attempt to combat underage drinking.

The alcohol-deterrent measure will be used when young people gather in Newcastle-Under-Lyme's anti-social behaviour hotspots, the council said.

Neighbourhood policing teams will also focus on alcohol prohibition zones including Newcastle town centre, parks and open spaces and in Kidsgrove.

If alcohol is found, drinks will be seized and the teenager's parents told.

The dip-sticks have been used over the last two summer holidays, which police say is traditionally a period when anti-social behaviour can increase.

"We are hoping that this initiative will mean that residents throughout the borough can enjoy a trouble-free summer," councillor Phil Maskery said.
