Balloons colour the sky at proms

Balloons at the Flying Proms

Hot air balloonists from around the South East have gathered at a musical prom in Kent to take the weekend's festivities into the sky.

The Flying Proms at Headcorn Aerodrome near Ashford brought together classical and popular music with aerial displays at the former World War II airbase.

During the weekend, vintage aircraft visited and a fleet of classic cars and steam traction engines were on show.

Evenings at the annual events involved open air concerts with picnics.

More than 100 spectators turned up at 0600 BST on Saturday to watch the first flight, with about 30 balloons, set off.

Liz Meek, from balloon club Windbags, said: "We've made it bigger this year and invited people from clubs in Sussex, Surrey and London to come and join us."

"People love to see the balloons, they have been waving to us from their garden as they go past."

The weekend included a classical performance from the English National Orchestra and tribute acts Rumours of Fleetwood Mac and Abba Magic.
