Gang forces its way into homes

A gang which robs elderly householders in rural areas at night has struck again.

Thieves forced their way into another home at Chelwood Gate, East Sussex, on Monday evening and stole cash.

Another three robberies have occurred between 1900 GMT and 2230 GMT in rural locations such as Gun Hill, Crawley Down and Laughton since 14 November.

Police are advising villagers to be vigilant after dark and to answer the door with the chain secured.

Suspicious activity

Ch Insp Neil Honnor, Wealden district commander, said: "Although no one has been seriously injured in these incidents, they are appalling attacks on elderly or vulnerable members of our community.

"The offenders are targeting secluded properties in rural locations along the A22 and I urge members of these communities to be extra vigilant."

Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity, in particular if it involves a group of four or five people, who are likely to be using a vehicle.

Police are also interested in any information about unfamiliar people knocking on doors, possibly in preparation for a later offence.
