Flood warning after heavy showers

About 500 reports of flooding have been made to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service following heavy rain overnight in parts of the county.

More than 50 fire officers were called to the Chobham, Woking, Camberley, Egham and Chertsey areas.

Chris Mitchell, Environment Agency spokesman, said 65 properties had been flooded after 3in (83mm) of rain had fallen in certain areas.

A flood warning is in place for the Hoe Stream between Normandy and Woking.

Mr Mitchell said the flooded properties included 25 in Lightwater, 20 in Chobham, 10 in Bagshot, five in Ash and another five in Windlesham.

Localised downpours

The Lightwater Stream, Chobham Bourne, and the Addlestone and Hale Bournes had all burst their banks.

Mr Mitchell said that flooding was so bad flood officers were unable to get into Chobham to access affected properties.

"The downpours were very localised. Guildford had just 15mm (0.6in) of rain and the M3 was hardly affected," he said.

He said he expected the situation to die down but rivers were still at high levels.

A spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said officers were pumping 1.8m (6ft) of water from a shop basement near Camberley.

A flood watch remains on the Chertsey and Addlestone Bournes.

Trains between Aldershot and Guildford were disrupted by a landslide between Brookwood and Ash Vale in Surrey.

South West Trains said it would take several days to remove the mud and ensure the line was safe to use.
