Council cancels Tyson city visit

Mike Tyson An amateur boxing gala in the Sussex city of Brighton to be hosted by former world boxing champion Mike Tyson has been blocked by the council leader.

The decision to scrap the show came after women's groups voiced anger that the boxer is a convicted rapist.

It also followed calls for the 39-year-old not to be allowed in the UK due to his violent reputation.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Simon Burgess said he was confident he had made the right decision.

Tyson was the youngest ever heavyweight champion but was jailed for rape in 1992.

The event had been due to take place at the Brighton Centre on 22 March.

It had been billed as part of a drive to get youngsters back into boxing and disciplined sports.
