Iraq hero opens new military wing

Sandhurst Old College Iraq war hero Pte Johnson Beharry, VC, has followed heroes such as Churchill and Montgomery by having a wing named after him at Sandhurst.

The 26-year-old, who received the Victoria Cross (VC) for his bravery in Iraq, formally opens the £3.4m block at the Royal Military Academy on Friday.

Current trainee officers at Sandhurst, on the Surrey-Berkshire border, include Princes William and Harry.

The building is being opened ahead of the 150th anniversary of the VC.

Grenada-born Pte Beharry was the first living soldier to be awarded the VC since 1969.

He was given the honour after twice guiding colleagues to safety while under attack in Iraq.

Pte Beharry was seriously injured in the second incident.

Sandhurst's commandant Major General Andrew Ritchie said: "It is really important to us.

"We have a tradition at Sandhurst of naming buildings after famous people... and we thought it would be appropriate to name this block after some famous VC holders and particularly those of more junior ranks."

Pte Beharry said: "It's an honour, it's an honour."

The block provides each soldier with their own en-suite bedroom for the first time.

As well as Pte Beharry, wings have been named in honour of Naik (Corporal) Agansing Rai, a Gurka who served in Burma in 1944, and Pte Richard Masters of the Royal Army Service Corps for his actions near Bethune in France in 1918.
