Man kills wife, 84, reversing car

The damaged wall at the couple's home

An 84-year-old woman has died after her husband backed their car into her on the driveway of their Sheffield home.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said Doreen Dickinson's death in Halifax Road, Grenoside on Tuesday appeared to be "a tragic accident".

The couple are thought to have been preparing for a day out when Mr Dickinson, 85, reversed the automatic Mercedes saloon on the driveway.

The car hit his wife and then crashed through a low wall, police said.

Police said the elderly couple were taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital, where Mrs Dickinson later died.
