Shooting linked to street fracas

A shooting in which a Sheffield man was killed has been linked to an earlier disturbance between two groups of men.

James Kamara, 22, of Pitsmoor, died of multiple wounds after being shot with a semi-automatic weapon in Brunswick Street, Broomhall, on Wednesday night.

Police said the shooting, in which three other men in their early 20s were seriously injured, was gang-related.

Two large groups of males were earlier involved in an incident in Devonshire Street in which glasses were thrown.

Detectives said the confrontation in Devonshire Street, at about 1700 BST, was believed to have lasted about five minutes.

At about 1830 BST the four men were shot in Brunswick Street.

Mr Kamara was taken to the city's Northern General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Initial post-mortem test results revealed he had died from multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

A 21-year-old from Sheffield, who suffered serious injuries, remains in hospital under police protection. Two other Sheffield men, aged 20 and 23, were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

After the shooting, which police described as an "isolated and targeted attack", the offenders are believed to have fled in a silver Vauxhall Vectra, registration FJ52 GWP.

They drove through the Broomhall estate on Collegiate Crescent, Park Lane and Clarkehouse Road.

The partially burnt-out car was found abandoned later that evening behind a pub off Whitehouse Lane, Walkley.

A spokesman said: "Anyone who saw a car of this make and model or any other suspicious behaviour after 6pm around Brunswick Street should call South Yorkshire Police."
