Two new car parks plan for town

Two new car parks are to be created close to Barnsley town centre if a bid for funding is successful.

Barnsley Council wants to built the car parks on the sites of the former Carpet World store at Lambra Road and the former CEAG building at Kendray Street.

The buildings will be demolished. The council said retailers were concerned about a lack of parking spaces.

The car parks will be open by the summer if regional development agency Yorkshire Forward agrees to fund them.

Councillor Bill Newman said: "The creation of temporary car parks close to the town centre sends a positive message to retailers that we are listening to their concerns regarding the provision of car parking.

"The creation of more than 200 parking spaces will be welcomed by businesses and visitors alike."
