Man in court over woman's death

Katrina Preece

A 27-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a mother-of-one from Barnsley.

Katrina Preece, 25, was found dead at her home in Summerdale Road, Cudworth, on New Year's Day. Post-mortem tests showed she had died from head injuries.

Andrew Wilson, of St Christopher's Close, Ardsley, appeared at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with her murder.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court next Monday.

Ms Preece's family paid tribute to her in a statement released by South Yorkshire Police on Monday.

They said: "Katrina was a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister who will be sadly missed by all family and friends. We are all utterly devastated by what has happened.

"We would like to thank everyone for the kind support we've received at this tragic time."

Senior investigating officer Det Supt Martyn Bates said: "It has been a difficult time for the family, especially as the incident happened on New Year's Day.

"We are supporting them with specially trained officers."
