Peer to face court over M1 crash

Lord Ahmed

A Labour peer is to face court over a dangerous driving allegation after a motorway crash in which a man died.

Lord Ahmed, 51, of Rotherham, was driving his Jaguar when it was in collision with another car on the M1 in South Yorkshire on Christmas Day 2007.

The driver of the other car, Martyn Gombar, 28, was killed. Lord Ahmed, who was in the car with his wife and mother, had facial injuries and shock.

Police said he had been summoned to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

He will appear in court at a date to be fixed.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that the case involves the alleged use of a mobile phone around the time of the accident.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "On advice from the Special Crime Division of the CPS, a 51-year-old Rotherham man has been issued with a summons to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court in relation to driving his motor car dangerously on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 40 and 35 on 25 December 2007."

Lord Ahmed was appointed to the House of Lords in 1998 and has lived in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, since childhood.
