Four held after student injured

Four people have been arrested after a university student suffered serious head injuries in an assault in Sheffield city centre.

Police said the 21-year-old was injured during a confrontation between several people at the junction of West Street and Regent Street at about 0200 BST.

The student is being treated in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for life-threatening head injuries.

His family, from North Yorkshire, are at his bedside.

Three men and one woman are being questioned over the incident.

Det Ch Insp Steve Williams, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "Although we do have people in custody in connection with this incident we still need witnesses to come forward.

"Anyone who was in the area at the time who believes they witnessed the incident is urged to contact the police in confidence."
