Credits roll at town's old cinema

The curtain finally falls on the Odeon cinema in Doncaster on Thursday night - ending 74 years of entertainment.

The cinema is no longer deemed to be viable and has been sold to Lazarus Properties, a local company behind several town centre developments.

It opened as the Gaumont Theatre in 1934 and was one of the last to change its name to the Odeon in 1987.

It was a popular music venue in the 1950s and 1960s, hosting Buddy Holly, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

The last film to be screened at The Odeon will be Never Back Down at 2030 BST on Thursday.

Lazarus Properties said it had no plans to develop the site "at the moment", but there are fears it could be demolished in future to make way for a new development.

Campaign group The Friends of Doncaster Odeon has called for the property to be granted Grade II listed status to protect it from demolition.
