Region may host Bollywood Oscars

Yorkshire Tourist Board bid Yorkshire will learn on Friday if its bid to host the Bollywood Oscars has been successful.

The region is hoping to beat rival contender New York to be selected as the venue for the International Indian Film Academy Weekend 2007.

Those behind the bid to bring the four-day celebration of Indian cinema to Yorkshire say it will generate an estimated £10m for the region.

The IIFA weekend attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors.

Events would be spread between Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Hull.

Global coverage

Bid director Zulfi Karim said: "This is a huge opportunity for Yorkshire.

"Typically a minimum of 8,000 of the visitors stay over an average three-night period and thousands more come for the individual events or to simply be a part of the IIFA weekend.

"Media coverage will be extensive and global, it's exactly the kind of event we need to be grabbing for Yorkshire."

The celebration traditionally takes place in June and kicks off with a red carpet event for the biggest names in Indian cinema, and the world premiere of the year's biggest Bollywood epic.

On the second day a charity cricket match is held, with day three devoted to the Bollywood Oscars.

Location visits throughout the region for those involved in film production are held on the final day of the event.
