Thousands flock to naval air day

Preview day at RNAS Yeovilton

More than 36,000 people are expected through the turnstiles at the annual air day at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset.

Organisers say visitors to the show -which marks 100 years of naval aviation - will be able to enjoy static exhibits and a six-hour flying display.

Commanding officer Chris Palmer said it was great people could get so close to the aircraft.

"We also have a Vulcan coming here this year and that's probably attracted at least 6,000 visitors," he added.

The Black Cats, the Royal Navy helicopter display team, the Red Arrows, Italy's Frecce Tricolon and the Royal Jordanian Falcons are expected to perform at Saturday's show.

RNAS Yeovilton is home to Royal Navy (RN) Lynx Helicopters and RN Commando Helicopter Force.

The base operates more than 100 aircraft in four different categories and is staffed by around 1,675 service and 2,000 civilian personnel including MoD employees and permanent contractors.
