Pier lives on in Monopoly game

Monopoly board Somerset edition

The Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare has a space dedicated to it on the new Somerset version of the traditional property board game Monopoly.

The pavilion was destroyed in just 90 minutes in a fire on the 104-year-old pier in July.

The pier is pictured on the lid of the latest version's box and takes The Angel Islington's slot from the original game, with a £100 price tag.

Other Somerset towns included on the board include Wells and Taunton.

The city of Wells takes the exclusive Mayfair slot and is priced at £400, with Taunton appearing as the next expensive and taking Park Lane's place on the board with a price of £350.

'Heart of Somerset'

Mark Marriott, who created the game, said: "It was unthinkable that we would not include the Grand Pier in all its pomp and glory.

"It's at the heart of Somerset and the heart of our new game. That was the overwhelming call from the great Somerset public. It will now live on forever."

Two designs for the redesign of the real pier's pavilion have been shortlisted and the winner will be chosen before the end of October. The pier is expected to be completely restored by the summer of 2010.

The Somerset version of the Monopoly game goes on sale from 14 October.
