MP joins village raw sewage row

Dan Norris MP (centre) inspects a raw sewage puddle outside the Red Lion pub in Paulton

An MP has accused a council of "half-hearted" action to sort out a raw sewage problem.

A blockage which led raw sewage to flow across a pavement in Paulton was first reported to Bath and North East Somerset Council in January.

Labour MP for Wansdyke Dan Norris said the council acted to fix the problem in June and again in September only after being told he had taken up the issue.

No-one from B&NES council has so far been available to comment.

Paulton Parish councillors wrote to their MP in June saying they were frustrated with the lack of action by B&NES.

Mr Norris said within 24 hours of a scheduled meeting between himself and the parish council, workmen arrived to cleanse the area and replace an inspection chamber cover which had lifted allowing the sewage to flow across the pavement.

"People were having to walk by and through the raw sewage, wheeling buggies and pushchairs," he said.

The work carried out in June did not repair the cause of the problem and within weeks the sewerage system had backed up again, he added.

After the parish council complained to B&NES again on 25 September saying it intended to involve Mr Norris, more work was carried out.

"The action B&NES has taken is half-hearted and the area needs to be cleaned and disinfected," said Mr Norris.

"What is astonishing is the trail of failure by B&NES, the local authority responsible for sorting this serious health problem out."
