Childcare services get £6m boost

Childcare services in Somerset have been awarded a £6m grant from the government's Sure Start programme.

The money will be used to develop private, voluntary and independent care facilities for children up to five years old across the county.

The grant will be given in £2m instalments over the next three years.

About £1m has already been allocated for new childcare buildings. Existing facilities will also be improved and nursery opening hours extended.

Jenni Boyles, the council's early years leader, said: "The extra funding is great news for parents and young children across Somerset."

Councillor Pauline Clarke, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said: "Providing excellent childcare facilities across Somerset allows parents more flexibility to participate in other activities such as working or learning.

"The investment in childcare facilities ensures that children can enjoy their early years learning and playing in a safe environment."
