University offers funeral degree

The University of Bath is to offer a degree course for funeral directors.

The two-year foundation course includes bereavement counselling, law, customer service and disposal of remains.

After completing the foundation degree students can study for a further year to gain a Bachelor of Science BSc (Hons) degree in funeral services.

"The honours year allow students to continue their studies and tailor them closely to fit in with their career," a university spokeswoman said.

'Broad understanding'

Glennys Howarth, head of Bath's Centre for Death and Society, was told on Monday she could go ahead with plans to advertise the course developed with the National Association of Funeral Directors.

The foundation degree in funeral services would provide students with a broad understanding of social science and humanities perspectives on death, dying and loss in the context of their professional practice, the university said.

"While developing an appreciation of theoretical developments in this field, it will also enhance students' analytical skills and grasp of professional implications, ethics and practice issues," the spokeswoman added.

The university also offers a master's level degree (MSc) in death and society
