A Somerset school is hoping to achieve eco-school status - an award which recognises its efforts to save energy and help the environment.
Milverton Primary School already generates up to 20% of its electricity each year from solar panels.
The school is also hoping to install a wind turbine and use recycled rainwater to flush toilets.
Head teacher Paul Bish said the school's 200 pupils had been "really enthusiastic" about the project.
'Lasting impression'
He said: "If the children have a cup of water and there is any left, rather than waste it they pour it into a bucket which is then used to water plants in the school.
"They've been encouraging their parents to get involved with similar schemes at home. I think this has made a lasting impression on them."
In future the school could generate up to 80% of its electricity when a suitable place is found on site for a 6kW wind turbine.
If Milverton Primary wins green flag status, it says it could become an information centre for other schools looking to follow its lead.
