Resort gets new rescue hovercraft

Light of Elizabeth A second rescue hovercraft for Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset has been officially launched.

The £15,000 Light of Elizabeth is smaller than its sister craft, Spirit of Lelaina, and will be used primarily for training and river rescues.

The Spirit of Lelaina was named after five year-old Lelaina Hall from Worcestershire, who died after becoming trapped in the mud at Berrow in 2002.

The new craft is named after her sister who was born a year after the tragedy.

Local fund-raising

"In 2002, when Lelaina Hall died, mum was pregnant with Elizabeth and we though it was very poignant and fitting to have Elizabeth's name on our new craft," said hovercraft pilot Simon Triggol.

Both vessels were bought with money raised by local people.

Spirit Of Lelaina has helped and rescued more than 95 people during its three years of operation.

Light of Elizabeth was launched on Burnham seafront on Saturday at the Emergency Services Community Awareness and Promotion Event (ESCAPE), a day of demonstrations and displays by the emergency services.
