A teenager, who apparently had been drinking, was rescued after running into the River Severn in Shrewsbury.
The 17-year-old was pulled out of the river by a member of the security staff at the West Mid Showground in the early hours on Friday, police said.
The boy would get a bill from the fire service, which was also called out, the West Mercia force said.
Police said the teenager was given "suitable words of advice" about his behaviour.
