Railway 'to turn into attraction'

The site of an old railway line has been bought by Shropshire County Council to turn into an attraction.

Land on the former Cambrian branch line, from Gobowen to Porth-y-waen, will also be used to build a road for a proposed medical centre in Oswestry.

Council chiefs said they also hoped a cycle lane could be built over the land, previously owned by Network Rail.

The council said it was now starting to clear the land of litter in preparation for planning the projects.

County council environment spokesman John Everall said: "The purchase of the Cambrian branch line is an exciting catalyst for these dependant projects.

"We are hoping that this will have a positive impact providing healthcare facilities, generating visitors and improving the viability of the area."
