Baby death parents feeling 'raw'

The parents of a baby whose death was recorded as an open verdict at an inquest said they were still feeling "very raw".

Olivia Perkins was four months old when she died while sleeping in the bed of her parents, Glenn and Louise, in Coton Mount, Shrewsbury, in December.

A post-mortem examination was inconclusive. The parents think she died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Mr Perkins said there was "still a lot to accept".

The post-mortem found no signs of external or internal injury and although there was some bleeding in the lung there were no other signs of suffocation.

'She wanted mum'

The inquest was told Olivia was teething and restless on the night she died and her parents had taken her to their bed.

Mrs Perkins told BBC Radio Shropshire: "She was showing signs of having a cold and she was getting very frustrated because she couldn't have her dummy.

"So the intention was settle her off, but obviously young babies you get over tired.

"A mother knows what a baby wants and I know that night she wanted her mum.

"She was smiling at me and that was it. That was the last I saw."

Mr Perkins said: "We (gave) her Calpol and tried settling her down for the night and we were tired as well.

"So as Louise cradled her in bed, we fell asleep that way and woke up exactly the same way as we fell asleep to be honest."
