Temporary flood barriers put up

Floods in Shrewsbury Extra flood barriers have been put up in Shrewsbury as river levels continue to rise in the Shropshire town.

Temporary defences have been installed at Coleham Head to protect homes and businesses in the Abbey Foregate area from flood water.

An Environment Agency flood warning is in place for Shrewsbury and the River Severn is now expected to peak at about 4.4m (14.4ft) on Monday afternoon.

Nine roads and two car parks have been closed due to the swollen river.

More rain forecast

The River Severn from Buildwas to Coalport is predicted to peak on Monday evening.

In Shrewsbury, Gravel Hill Lane, Sydney Avenue, Victoria Avenue, Coleham Head, Berwick Road and Old Coleham are shut.

Doctors Lane and Riverside South, in Bridgnorth, are also closed, as is the Cross Houses to Atcham road.

Frankwell and St Julian's car parks in Shrewsbury are shut to traffic.

Anthony Perry, from the Environment Agency, said more rain was forecast.

"We're looking at the worst case scenario in our models and being prepared and we will be monitoring it throughout the day," he said.

Flood warnings remain in place for stretches of the Severn from the Shropshire/Wales border to Shrawardine and from Buildwas to Coalport.
