Man charged with badger hunting

A 37-year-old man has gone on trial accused of hunting a badger after paraphernalia and mobile phone footage was found at his house.

Mark Paddock, of Aintree Close, Leegomery, Telford, denies a charge of lamping - hunting the animal with a bright light in 2005 and 2006.

Three clips of dogs attacking a badger were found on his phone, Telford Magistrates' Court heard.

His two lurchers had injuries consistent with badger hunting.

The pets, called Sally and Buster, had suffered injuries to their lower jaws which a vet told the court had been caused by a large animal, like a badger.

Lock knives found

In one mobile phone clip, the sentence: "Kill him Bust" can be heard which the prosecution allege is Paddock talking to his dog.

After his arrest in March 2006, his former home in Donnington was searched and two lock knives were found - one with badger blood on it. Other pet dogs were also found.

A lawn edge spade, which can be used for badger digging, was also found. Paddock's home does not have a garden or lawn, the prosecution said.

In interviews with police Paddock - who was not in court - said he had not used his dog Buster to hunt badgers and he had taken him rabbiting with his daughter.

The case continues.
