More homes now at flooding risk

Flooded allotments in Osney, Oxford

Almost 1,800 properties have been added to a map of Oxford which shows areas at risk of flooding.

The Environment Agency has studied the effects of flooding in 2007 and reclassified the Jericho area as an "at risk" zone on its flood map.

Properties are now thought to be at higher risk from flooding in Grandpont, but at lower risk in Wolvercote.

Hundreds of homes flooded in 2007 after torrential rain caused the Rivers Thames and Cherwell to overflow.

About 1790 properties which were previously not identified as being in flood areas are now considered to be at risk.

An additional 660 properties already on the flood map are now at greater risk than previously thought.

However, 1200 properties have had their risk level lowered and another 213 have been removed from the flood map.

The Environment Agency said insurance companies use its flood map to determine the cost of cover.
