Project to improve fitness starts

A scheme has been launched to encourage adults to be more active after a survey showed only a quarter of Oxfordshire residents exercised regularly.

The new Get Oxfordshire Active (GO Active) project aims to get anyone aged over 16 doing moderate exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week.

A Sport England survey showed only 26% of adults in the county achieved this.

Toni Bridges from the GO Active team said: "This has potential to increase physical activity at a local level."

Special coordinators have been appointed to point people to existing activities, such as swimming, exercise classes and gyms and develop new ones, according to local demand.

They will also work closely with GPs to identify people who would most benefit from being more active.
