Town honours returning soldiers

Soldiers from the Royal Logistics Corp based in Didcot have received Iraq and Afghanistan service medals.

The 56 troops from the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment were cheered by a large crowd as they paraded through the town centre.

A one-minute silence was also observed on behalf of Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary O'Donnell who was killed in Afghanistan on 10 September.

WO2 O'Donnell died while clearing an explosive device in Helmand Province.

Troops from the regiment played a key role in clearing the route during Operation Oqab Tsuka, which involved moving a large turbine from Kandahar Airfield to the Kajaki Dam.

It was the largest-ever route clearance operation undertaken by the British Army since World War II.

WO2 O'Donnell, a father-of-four, was originally from Edinburgh, but had been living with his family in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.
