Life sentence for doorstep murder

Martin Joyce

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for stabbing an Afghan immigrant to death outside his house in Oxford.

Martin Joyce, 22, was found guilty of murdering Enayit Khalili in Fiennes Road, Rosehill after returning from a night out in March last year.

The 31-year-old, who moved to the UK as an asylum seeker in 2001, was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Joyce, from Bradford, Yorkshire was told at Oxford Crown Court he must spend a minimum of 15 years in jail.

The prosecution told the court that witnesses overheard Joyce boasting about the killing on a night out with friends.

But a witness for the defence told jurors he had seen Mr Khalili arguing with an Asian man, who did not match Joyce's description, over money.

Det Ch Insp Colin Seaton from Thames Valley Police said: "I feel that the sentence reflects the severity of this brutal attack.

"Mr Joyce must now face the consequences of his actions and I hope that the family of Mr Khalili and Mr Joyce can begin to rebuild their lives.

"I am pleased for Mr Khalili's family and friends that justice has been done after a long investigation spanning several months."

Joyce, from Larch Hill in Bradford, denied the murder but was found guilty by majority verdict.

His family said he would appeal against his conviction.
