Boys' school hails GCSE results

A boys' school in Oxford has scored top marks in the GCSE results with more than 75% of all grades at A*.

Magdalen College School said one third of its year-group attained 10 or more A* grades with 50% of pupuils (48 boys) getting 9 or more A* grades.

The independent school claimed it had been a record year.

Meanwhile, Abingdon School pupils, Alexander Muir, 16, of Berkshire, and Geoffrey Penington, 16, both achieved 12 GCSE A* grades and two AS-level As.

Mark Turner, head teacher at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire, said: "Nearly 80% of the 1,476 entries received an A*or A grade."

Individual achievements at Magdalen school included Tom Stevens, who achieved 10 A* grades as well as playing rugby at No 8 for south-west England U16s, and Sasha Ockenden, who sings in the National Youth Training Choir, who attained the same results.
