Warning over cash work fraudster

Elderly residents in Oxford have been warned to be on their guard after a potential fraudster stopped two people in the street and demanded cash.

An elderly man was approached in the street in Cutteslowe by a man who demanded money for building work that he claimed to have done on his house.

The man claimed he was from the council and that he had done work on the roof.

In the second incident a 92-year-old woman was approached in Blenheim Drive by a man asking to be paid for work.

In both incidents, which happened on Monday and Tuesday, the people refused to hand over any money.

Det Con Louise Tompkins, of Thames Valley Police, said: "We are unsure if these incidents are connected, but we want to remind elderly people to be on their guard for bogus callers. Always check the identification.

"If you are unsure about a trader, ask them to return later when a friend or member of the family can be there."
