Detainees 'could be prosecuted'

Prison officers in riot gear

A number of detainees at an immigration detention centre in Oxfordshire could face criminal prosecution following a disturbance, the Home Office has said.

Small fires were started and one person suffered smoke inhalation at Campsfield House in Kidlington on Saturday.

Detainees were held in an exercise yard before a team of prison officers in riot gear escorted them to their rooms.

The Home Office said an investigation would take place. It is the latest in a number of disturbances at the centre.

""[The disturbance] was instigated by a small number of individuals determined to frustrate removal. "

Staff were cleaning up the centre on Sunday and examining any damage.

A Home Office spokesman said: "[The disturbance] was instigated by a small number of individuals determined to frustrate removal.

"They will not succeed and we are considering prosecution.

"Our commitment to increase removals of those who have no right to be here is why we are expanding our detention estate by December 2008."

He added that detainees are treated "humanely" and with "compassion" by prison officers.

Rattling gates

On Saturday, about 10 fire engines, 50 police officers and a police helicopter were sent to the scene after smoke was seen billowing from the centre.

A police cordon was set up around the centre and dog handlers patrolled the perimeters, which was not breached.

A number of detainees were seen in an exercise yard rattling the gates and shouting before they were taken back to their rooms.

There have been a series of problems at the centre.

In March 2007 nine people were hurt in a disturbance and in August last year 26 men fled after a fire, with eight still on the run.

Another 120 detainees rioted in December.

Evan Harris, Liberal Democrats MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, said: "This is the fourth reported disturbance in the last 16 months and suggests there is something seriously wrong either with the Home Office systems or the management of the centre."

Campsfield was converted to a detention centre holding 200 male asylum seekers in 1993 and is run by the American company GEO.
