Oxfam's first editions to be sold

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

First edition books by famous writers, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, will be auctioned in Oxford after being donated to Oxfam shops.

Conan Doyle's first two Sherlock Holmes stories, handed into a Harrogate, North Yorkshire, branch of the charity, is expected to be sold for £9,000.

Other lots include a first edition Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, listed to sell for £500.

The auction will take place at Bonhams on 20 May.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Study in Scarlet will be the star lot of the collection, which also includes first editions of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence and CS Lewis's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Sir Ernest Shackleton's The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917, estimated to be sold for up to £1,000, is also among the rare books.
