'Murder attempt' teacher remanded

A science teacher has appeared before magistrates charged with the attempted murder of a 14-year-old pupil at a school in Nottinghamshire.

Peter Harvey, 49, of Rannoch Drive, Mansfield, is accused of attacking Jack Waterhouse at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield on 8 July.

Mr Harvey was remanded in custody by magistrates in the town to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 27 July.

Former pupils arrived at the court with letters of support for Mr Harvey.

'Got emotional'

One girl, who wished not to be named, broke down in tears outside the courtroom.

Another former pupil, 18-year-old Joseph Smith said: "I just wanted to come here today to show support.

"He was my form tutor and he was a good teacher. It was upsetting to see him in there. I got a bit emotional."

Mr Harvey spoke only to confirm his name and address during the 10-minute hearing.

No application was made for bail.

Jack is said to be in a stable condition at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham where he is receiving treatment for a fractured skull and a bleed to the brain.
