Traders fail knife purchase test

Nearly 30 shops and market stalls in Nottingham have been caught selling knives to children.

Under 18s were sent into 80 premises over five weeks to try and buy knives - and at 29 they were able to do so.

Paring knives, Stanley knives, kitchen knife and an entire knife block were among the items sold.

Police said ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse - though those caught in the operation have only received a warning.

Officers are urging shop owners to make sure staff are fully trained - and have pledged to carry out further undercover checks to make sure they are not continually breaking the rules.
