Woman and child killed by train

A woman and her seven-year-old grandson were killed when they were hit by a train on a crossing in Nottinghamshire.

The incident happened on Saturday at about 1840 GMT just north of the Moor Bridge tram stop in Bestwood Village.

British Transport Police has confirmed the train was travelling between Worksop and Nottingham on the Robin Hood Line.

Officers said the pair were killed at a foot crossing where train and tram lines run parallel.

Insp Alan Radford, of British Transport Police, said an investigation was under way.

"We have spoken to one or two people. Certainly one person in the close vicinity said that there didn't seem to be anything untoward going on at the time.

"This terrible incident is obviously very traumatic for the family of the deceased and the driver of the train"

"But we are still investigating and have other leads to follow up at the moment."

Mr Radford also said there were proper warning signs at the crossing.

"Certainly at this particular crossing itself there will be warning signs there about approaching trains, not to use the crossing whilst the trains are approaching.

"There will be gates at the crossing as well and I'm told that the gates were fully functional last night," he added.

Family 'devastated'

A spokeswoman from East Midlands Trains, which operates the service, said the woman and the boy were hit by the 1745 GMT Worksop to Nottingham train.

She described the incident as a "tragic accident".

The 56-year-old woman's sister, who did not want to be named, visited the site to lay flowers at the scene.

She said: "We're devastated. It looks a bit slippy but I don't know whether it was slippery last night. She had three grandsons and doted on all of them."

Mr Radford said: "The BTP is working with Nottinghamshire Police in the investigation into this tragic loss of life.

"This terrible incident is obviously very traumatic for the family of the deceased and the driver of the train."

Tram services resumed on Sunday but train services have not been affected as there is currently no Sunday service on the Robin Hood Line.
