Council backs leisure centre plan

Councillors have backed a proposal to build a £6m leisure centre at the Djangoly City Academy in Nottingham.

The new centre in Gregory Boulevard will replace the existing Noel Street Baths, city officials said.

City spokesman Nigel Hawkins said the project is part of a £18.5m overhaul of the city's leisure services.

The centre will have a six-lane swimming pool, 50-station fitness suite and a dance and fitness studio. It will be open to both the public and pupils.

The centre will be open between 0700 and 2130 from Monday to Friday as well as 0800 and 1800 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

Construction work will begin in January 2009, with completion due by the end of March 2010.

The Noel Street Leisure Centre will close when the new centre opens.
