A new £5m extension to a science centre in Nottingham could bring more than 150 jobs to the city, it is hoped.
The new Laurus Building on the BioCity site in Pennyfoot Street, which opened on Wednesday, will offer extensive office space and lab facilities.
It is expected to allow already successful firms to further expand.
The five-storey state-of-the-art building is the third to be developed on the BioCity site.
'Amazing science'
Dr Glenn Crocker, chief executive of BioCity, said the firms already based there were growing fast.
He said: "The sort of companies that we have here are pretty wide-ranging but they're doing some incredibly exciting things.
"So for example there is a company that is making artificial bone. Others are developing treatments for cancers, others are developing artificial blood products that can be used out in the field or in Africa.
"So there's some amazing science going on."
East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) has invested £4m in developing and refurbishing the facility.
BioCity Nottingham Ltd was launched in September 2003 and develops and operates bioscience and healthcare-related incubation and innovation facilities.
