Man in parachute jump death named

An experienced parachutist who died as he attempted a risky manoeuvre has been named by a coroner's office.

Sam Bailey, 30, from near Grantham, Lincolnshire, was on his third jump at the British Parachute School at Langar, near Bingham on Saturday.

It is believed he left the plane at 12,500ft (3,810m) but approached the ground too fast and hit his head on landing.

Mr Bailey was a successful photographer and was filming before the accident.

He was airlifted to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham after Saturday's incident but later died.

"He wasn't a daredevil, he wasn't showing off, he just got it wrong. "
David Hickling, British Parachute School

The incident is now being investigated by the British Parachute Association (BPA).

David Hickling, a spokesman for the British Parachute School, said it was standard practice for the BPA to investigate every serious or fatal accident.

Mr Hickling said: "Sam was executing a landing and basically he turned too low to the ground and hit the ground whilst still on the turn with the lower part of his body and bounced and hit his head.

"He wasn't a daredevil, he wasn't showing off, he just got it wrong."

An inspection has found the parachute was in full working order.

Mr Bailey was filming a student on a tandem skydive shortly before the accident happened.

His previous subjects have included singer Amy Winehouse and chef Gordon Ramsay.
