Man charged with rape and murder

Whatton Prison

A man has been charged with the rape and murder of a prison inmate.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to Whatton Prison, on the A52 towards Grantham in Lincolnshire, at about 0115 BST on Monday after reports of a death.

HMP Whatton's Governor Lynn Saunders said two prisoners were in a cell when the incident happened.

Neil Wilkinson, 28, formerly from the Greater Manchester area, has been charged with the rape and murder of Stephen Hartley, also 28.

He will appear before Nottingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Ms Saunders said staff were alerted to an incident at about 0030 BST on Monday.

One of the prisoners was found dead and another was taken into police custody.

Staff have been carrying out a review of prisoners who may be vulnerable or at risk from other inmates.

Whatton Prison is a category C prison for adult male sex offenders, which can hold up to 840 inmates.
