City enters floral championship

Nottingham has entered the Britain in Bloom's Champion of Champions section for the first time.

Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society will visit the city following its previous gold medal success in the large city category.

The judges will be taken to Wollaton Park, the University of Nottingham and Arkwright Meadows Community Garden.

St Ives in Cornwall, Darley, Yorkshire, Alness in Scotland and Heysham in Lancashire are also in the competition.

Councillor Malcolm Wood, who chairs the Nottingham in Bloom Working Group, said: "It's a great accolade to be involved in the Champion of Champions competition.

"Not only does Nottingham in Bloom help to transform the city, it's an excellent catalyst for community cohesion."

The city won the gold medal in Britain in Bloom's large city category in 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007.
