Asthma research has £5.75m boost

A grant of £5.75 million will help fund research into asthma and other respiratory illnesses in Nottingham.

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust has received the funding from the National Institute for Health Research.

Over the next four years, research will be carried out to help treat asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung fibrosis.

New facilities will include a clinical trials unit and lung function laboratory on the City Hospital campus.

The announcement coincides with World Asthma Day.

The research will help develop and evaluate new treatments for all severities of asthma, and focus on improvements in everyday management of the condition.

Dr Tim Harrison, respiratory consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals and associate professor in respiratory medicine at the University of Nottingham, said it was an exciting development.
