City's tram travel costs increase

The cost of travelling by tram in Nottingham has increased, with some fares going up by 30%.

While some tickets have remained the same, particularly child prices, the cost of 10 single journeys has jumped from £10 to £13.

On its website, Nottingham Express Transit (NET) said fare increases were "due to above inflation increases in operating costs".

Tram campaigner Steve Barber said alternative power should be considered.

'Brilliant system'

"It would cost a lot more initially but after a few years, I think we would be getting our money back [from solar power]," said Mr Barber, chair for Becit, the Beeston and Chilwell for Integrated Transport group.

"Rises are inevitable unfortunately, when you depend on fuel and depend on oil.

"In Germany they have solar-powered trams and in Calgary in Canada, they are 100% wind-powered.

"We've got a brilliant system but would like to see the next phases powered by alternative energy."

NET was unavailable for comment.
