Vehicles seized in car crackdown

Vehicles have been seized and an air rifle recovered in a crime crackdown by Nottinghamshire Police.

Police stopped a total of 29 vehicles in the Kimberley and Eastwood areas of Nottingham on Thursday.

Two vehicles were seized for having no insurance and 10 fixed penalty notices were issued for offences such as not wearing a seatbelt when driving.

Insp John Lees said the crackdown on illegal vehicles and drivers would "disrupt criminal activity".

'Make a difference'

Police confirmed the air rifle would have further checks carried out on it.

Officers from the Vehicle Operating Standards Agency (VOSA) also checked vehicles for defects and issued a number of notices ordering motorists to fix any detected problems.

Talking about one of the cars being inspected, Sgt Simon Blincow said it would be dangerous to allow drivers to keep on using vehicles in poor condition.

"This vehicle has a serious defect in relation to the braking system. The oil from the engine is leaking and it goes onto the brake disc which causes a serious defect and makes the vehicle dangerous to be used on the road," he said.

Insp Lees added: "Many of the vehicles that don't have tax or MOTs are used by people committing or intending to commit crime.

"By working closely with other agencies, we can make a difference to ridding the road of these illegal motorists."
