Town bomb scare 'genuine mistake'

Mansfield market A bomb scare which saw the centre of a Nottinghamshire town evacuated was a "genuine mistake", police have said.

Streets around the Mansfield Building Society were sealed off at 1600 BST on Tuesday after a package was found in its reception area.

A controlled explosion was carried out at 1800 BST and the cordon was lifted.

Police said inquiries showed the parcel was a homemade toy camera left in the building society by a small child who had gone in with their mother.

Supt Mark Pollock from Mansfield and Ashfield said: "We take all reports of suspicious packages seriously and will deal with them in an appropriate and professional manner.

"it is clear that it was a genuine mistake and we are satisfied that there was no malicious intent. No further action will be taken."
