Legionella found in pool showers

Legionella bacteria Showers at a Nottinghamshire leisure centre have been closed after the discovery of legionella bacteria in a shower head during an inspection.

Experts were brought in to deal with the matter at the centre run by Rushcliffe Borough Council.

The showers were closed as legionella can only be inhaled in an aerosol or spray form, the council said.

Measures taken included disinfecting the water systems. The rest of the centre was open, including the pool.

A council spokesman said tests carried out before and after Christmas had revealed increased levels of the bacteria.

He added that the showers could be closed for up to 12 days as laboratory test results would take about 10 days to come through.
