Bus passengers stranded by flood

flood in Woodborough Roads and schools were closed in parts of Nottinghamshire after flash floods hit part of the county on Friday.

The fire service sent pumps to the village of Lambley where 39 people were rescued, including three people on a bus and others in an office.

Anthony Carver Smith from Nottingham City Transport said buses have been rerouted around Burton Joyce where the main street was closed.

Woodborough, Calverton, Lowdham and Nottingham were also hit by floods.

Alan Walters from the Environment Agency said rain was running off hills in the area and swelling streams.

Boats were used to take the stranded people from offices and buses in Lambley to safety.

"With fast-flowing water you never know what might be in there - tree trunks and other debris," one firefighter said.

Play at the Nottingham Open tennis tournament was also delayed and finally moved inside because of heavy rain.

Lambley resident Arthur Knowles said: "The water was about a foot deep in front of my property."

In Lincolnshire, about 15 shops at The Forum in North Hykeham were flooded.

Fire crews were sent to help pump water out of the shops.
