Flood defence for village homes

People living in a Northamptonshire village are to receive improved protection from flooding.

The Environment Agency has started a £25,000 project to remove silt and obstructions from Grendon Brook in Yardley Hastings.

About 130 tonnes of silt will be taken out during the works, which are expected to last about two weeks.

Trees blocking the watercourse will also be removed. There will be some traffic disruption during the works.

Malcolm Owers, operations delivery team leader for the Environment Agency, said: "This work is vital to help protect homes in Yardley Hastings from flooding.

"A build-up of silt can reduce the water-carrying capacity of a watercourse, and overhanging trees and other obstructions can cause water to back-up.

"Only trees which have either already fallen into the watercourse or those which are blocking the flow of water will be removed during the works."
